These encouraging signs are offset by a marked boost in case occurrence in Biakato Mine Health Area, Mandima Health Zone. Issues with access and security are affecting case finding and investigations, contact tracing, safe and dignified burials, decontamination of affected houses, and vaccination rings in parts of Mandima Health Zone. As of 15 October, a total of 3227 EVD cases were reported, including 3113 verified and 114 possible cases, of which 2154 cases died (total case casualty ratio 67%).

These motivating signs are offset by a marked boost in case occurrence in Biakato Mine Health Area, Mandima Health Zone. Issues with gain access to and security are impacting case finding and examinations, contact tracing, safe and dignified burials, decontamination of affected residences, and vaccination rings in parts of Mandima Health Zone. This is reflected in the decrease in the percentage of confirmed cases listed as contacts (from 57% to 13%) and increase in the percentage of cases passing away outside of Ebola Treatment Centres or Transit Centres (from 14% to 27%) this previous week. As of 15 October, a total of 3227 EVD cases were reported, consisting of 3113 validated and 114 probable cases, of which 2154 cases died (total case casualty ratio 67%). These areas bring extra obstacles to the reaction, consisting of: an extremely unstable security situation; difficulty accessing some remote areas; fairly poorer Ebola awareness and hold-ups to engaging with the community leading to skepticism and misconceptions; and, prospective under-reporting of cases.
