Houston school closes due to whooping cough outbreak – Chron

A Rice Military Catholic school closed its doors early for the holiday break after an outbreak of whooping cough, school leaders said.

The Rev. Phil Lloyd, pastor at St. Theresa Catholic School, told parents in a letter that whooping cough had infected students and staff members at the private school. Some children have been hospitalized.

Lloyd did not disclose how many students and staff members were affected. The bacterial infection is highly contagious.

“It is my prayer that we have no more children hospitalized due to the spread of this disease,” Lloyd said.

School officials are urging parents to seek medical care should their children have symptoms.

St. Theresa Catholic School, which is in contact with the Houston Health Department, closed early for Christmas break last Thursday and will reopen Jan. 7, Lloyd said.
