In its very first 5 years, the Garvey Institute will concentrate on 3 primary locations: cognitive aging and brain wellness, the impacts of psychological and physical injury on the brain, and dependency.
Garvey Institute scientists will develop on work currently being done at UW Medicine, and will likewise partner with scientists from within the University of Washington and other local health systems, Unützer said.
“These new programs will change the future of mental health and brain health in our area and beyond,” Unützer said in a news release announcing the donation.
“At some point, nearly every family is affected by a brain-health problem such as depression, Alzheimer’s disease or dependency,” Lynn Garvey stated in the news release. “These diseases are so common therefore destructive, and we wished to do something to help.”
In addition to clinical research study on treatments for brain conditions, the money will also money training efforts for researchers and researchers from different disciplines at the institute, in addition to a place for them to work together.
“The goal is not just to establish brain services but to get them rapidly put into practice,” he stated in an interview Wednesday.
The cash, contributed by Lynn and Mike Garvey, will start the development of the Garvey Institute for Brain Health Solutions.
The Garveys, who declined to be interviewed, have formerly donated cash to UW Medicine’s Institute of Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine, the psychiatry and behavioral sciences department, Harborview Medical Center, and the heart regrowth and gastroenterology programs.
This will be the second neuroscience-focused institute in Seattle. The Allen Institute for Brain Science takes a look at how the brain works, while the brand-new Garvey Institute will take a more medical method to brain health. The work done at each could mesh perfectly together, stated Dr. Jürgen Unützer, a teacher and chair of UW’s psychiatry and behavioral sciences department, which will be home to the Garvey Institute.
